God of War Laufey Lands on PS5 on 16 February 2027

Santa Monica Studio put the date on the record at San Diego Comic-Con — and confirmed in the same breath that a Kratos-led God of War is already in development behind it.

God of War Laufey has a release date. Santa Monica Studio confirmed at its San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday that the PS5 exclusive arrives on 16 February 2027, ending a two-month stretch in which the only official line was "coming soon". The studio then did something rather less expected: it confirmed that a further God of War, this one starring Kratos, is already in development and will follow Laufey, picking up directly from where her story goes.

How to read this: the date and the existence of a second, Kratos-led God of War are both confirmed — Santa Monica said so on stage. What is not confirmed is anything about that second game beyond its existence: no date, no window, no details. Pricing and pre-order specifics for Laufey were also not part of the announcement. We flag each below.

What Was Announced at Comic-Con

The date came out of a dedicated panel rather than a State of Play, which is a slight surprise — we had guessed a broadcast beat would be the venue. Engadget reported that Sony and Santa Monica confirmed 16 February 2027 during the Comic-Con session and simultaneously through PlayStation's social channels, and Push Square and Kotaku both carried the same date within the hour. Notably, there is still no dedicated post on the PlayStation Blog beyond June's original reveal — the announcement lived on the stage and on social.

The panel itself was a cast affair. Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Faye, appeared alongside Christopher Judge, returning as Kratos, with series creative lead Cory Barlog fronting the session; Forbes listed the full line-up. Sony's own framing of the premise has not shifted since the reveal: Faye wakes after her funeral in the Everywhen, described as the afterlife of the gods, and finds that the arrangements she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are coming apart while gods from across mythology fight over the space she has landed in.

One detail worth stating plainly, because it is the sort of thing that gets assumed: pre-orders had not opened as of Monday 27 July. A store wishlist is live, and that is all. No price, no edition breakdown, no pre-order bonus has been announced. If you see any of those quoted as fact this week, it is not coming from Santa Monica.

A Kratos Game Is Already Behind It

The sequel confirmation is the part that changes how you should read the next few years of PlayStation's calendar. Barlog told the panel that a separate God of War with Kratos as the lead is in development, that it will arrive after Laufey, and that it connects directly into Laufey's story rather than branching away from it.

That answers a question the June reveal left hanging. Handing a mainline God of War to a new protagonist invited an obvious worry — that Kratos had been quietly retired, or worse, that he would be wedged into Faye's game to keep the marketing familiar. Announcing a dedicated follow-up resolves both at once: Laufey gets to be her own game, and Kratos gets his own return rather than a supporting slot in someone else's.

What we do not have is anything else. No window, no title, no platform commitment, no indication of how far along it is. "In development" is the whole of the confirmed information, and it would be a mistake to read a 2028 or 2029 date into it. Treat it as a statement of intent that removes uncertainty about the series' direction, not as a calendar entry.

February 2027 Is Filling Up Fast

The more practical consequence of the date is that Sony has walked its biggest first-party swing of early 2027 into a genuinely crowded month. Kotaku's write-up made the point directly, listing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival and Metro 2039 as February 2027 releases sitting close to Laufey on the calendar.

Fable belongs on that list too, and it matters more for PS5 owners than the others. Playground Games' reboot was moved out of its autumn 2026 window back in May, with VGC reporting the delay to February 2027 and Microsoft framing it as giving the game "the dedicated moment it deserves" away from Grand Theft Auto VI. GamesRadar+ has since put it at 23 February. Fable remains a day-and-date PS5 release, so two of the month's largest games now land a week apart on the same console — a detail our earlier Fable piece was written before and does not yet reflect.

Confirmed: 16 February 2027, PS5, on disc and digital. Everything about the Kratos-led follow-up beyond "it exists and it is in development" is unannounced.

There is a readable logic to Sony's placement, though. Autumn 2026 is spoken for: Marvel's Wolverine on 15 September, then Grand Theft Auto VI on 19 November, which will flatten anything scheduled near it. Pushing past that into February gives Laufey a clear run at the post-holiday window, when players have new hardware, store credit and nothing much else to spend either on. Competing with Fable is a far better problem than competing with GTA VI.

The Disc Question, and the Backlash

The disc is still happening. Santa Monica confirmed a genuine pressed release earlier in July, which we covered in detail when it landed — and, as we argued then, that confirmation was itself a timing signal, because Sony stops pressing discs for new games in January 2028. A February 2027 date fits comfortably inside that window, which retrospectively validates the inference in our earlier analysis of the disc confirmation. That article was written before a date existed; the date has now arrived, and it lands where the disc implied it would.

What Santa Monica probably did not plan for is that the physical-media argument would partly swallow the announcement. Sony's social posts drew a wave of replies from the ongoing campaign against PlayStation's move away from discs — LEVEL UP led its coverage with the reaction rather than the date. The irony is fairly sharp: Laufey is one of the games that is getting a disc.

What It Means for PS5 Owners

If you own a PS5 and were waiting for a reason to care about early 2027, this is it, with three practical takeaways.

First, nothing you need to do right now. Pre-orders are not open. Wishlist it if you want the store to tell you when they are, and ignore any price you see quoted before Sony states one — a seven-month runway is more than enough time for invented numbers to circulate as fact.

Second, if you buy physical, plan around the month rather than the day. Two large day-and-date releases a week apart in February 2027 is exactly the pattern that produces thin disc allocations at launch, and it now sits inside the final year of new-disc production. Collectors have a reason to pre-order early once pre-orders exist, which is a sentence we would not have written for a February release five years ago.

Third, if you have a disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, none of the above applies and the calculation is simply whether February suits you better than a crowded autumn. It probably does. Our 2026 release rundown shows just how compressed the back half of this year already is.

The date is real and comfortably sourced. The Kratos follow-up is real but empty — a confirmed project with nothing attached to it yet. Keep those two apart when you read this week's coverage.

The Bottom Line

Santa Monica gave PS5 owners the two things they had been asking for since June: a date for God of War Laufey, and clarity that Kratos has not been written out of his own series. 16 February 2027 is confirmed, on PS5, on disc and digitally. The Kratos-led follow-up is confirmed to exist and to continue Faye's story, and confirmed as nothing else — anyone offering you a window for it is guessing.

The open questions are ordinary ones now: price, editions, pre-order timing, and whether a PC release eventually follows in the way the Norse games did. None of those have been announced, and we would rather say so than fill the gap. We will update this piece when Sony puts real numbers against them.
